The Indian Caste System has long been a defining part of indian history.  In the past, the caste system has determined a persons role in life.  People could only marry a person that was in their caste, as well as only get a job within their own caste.  The caste system is less extreme now, and people dont  follow the caste system as well as they used to.  The culture has become less strict, and the untouchables have become less shunned from the rest of the society.  One could say that the indian culture has become more westernised and more considerate of everone involved.
