Dating and Marriage
In India, there have been many ways of dating and marriage. Today, social considerations are very important in dating. Economic considerations are also important when choosing a date. When there is a marriage, the father of the bride has to send many gifts to the family of the groom (this is known as a dowry). Actually, the bride's parents pay for the entire wedding and on average they pay 30,000 dollars, which is three times their annual pay. At the time of the marriage, it is better for the boy to be a virgin, but the girl must be a virgin. It is also frowned upon when girls smoke or drink alcohol (anytime), because it makes them seem easy to get. In the case of an arranged marriage, the dating starts after the marriage is official for a month. After this, a ceremony called Roka is announced and is a ceremony of unity of the families of the bride and the groom. The time from Roka to the time of marriage must be less than nine months (this is because if they were to call off the marriage, it would harder for the girl to get another match). Although the bride's family pays for the wedding, the groom's family usually gives some money to the girl for a dress. In the past, all of this was very similar. Not much has changed since then.
Matchmaking
In Allahabad, India, mothers go to the matchmakers with their son’s or daughter’s pictures, were they are dresses in a suit or saris. Bringing a picture for them is not enough! They also bring pages of profiles that list: religion, cast, star sign, skin color, and income level. I guess it’s not enough just finding someone on your own, no matter how rich he or she is or if their are an Aries just like you?

There are over 130 of match making companies in India. One of the most popular Matchmakers is Shaadi. If your looking for someone, log on to www.Shaadi.com and chooses from over 9 million people. If you pay her $200 she will post your add in the newspaper, magazine, and rate you higher on line. Over 90% of the people registered are parents of the person being match, but not the person them selves.  Matchmaking websites are modern, but matchmaking has been going on for a while.  At first when the online match making started, not alot of people from India used it.  Now it is normal for them.
